PROGRAM OVERVIEW OF INTEGRATIVE HEALING THERAPIES
This class provides direct study in Integrative Medicine Therapies addressing history, theory, and usage. It is also included in the 650 hour Massage Therapy/Integrative Medicine program.
It is designed to inform students about career choices available in the natural health professions, as well as provide health care professionals with the knowledge they need to understand complementary health care options. In addition, the courses have been developed to prepare and inform the general student in the knowledge necessary to make informed choices in lifestyle and personal health care.
Background note: In the past year 42% of adults used at least one complementary medicine therapy. As careers, Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Massage Therapy, and Oriental Medicine are licensed in many states, and as a result they are widely accepted as supportive services and potential avenues for health care careers.
Methods of study in this program include: reading, discussion, writing, audio, video, demonstration/presentation by practitioners, research, and active student participation.

INTRODUCTION TO INTEGRATIVE HEALING
Provides a general introduction into the basic understanding of the diversity in health care belief systems through an overview of the history, development, and usage of medical, alternative, and tradition health care approaches. Physical modalities include: Western biomedicine, nutrition, Traditional Chinese Medicine, touch and bodywork therapies, botanicals and herbal medicine, homeopathy, and Ayurveda. Spirit, and the mind-body connection include breathwork, meditation, movement, music, and relaxation therapies, as well as studies in the Curandera and native American healing traditions. Methods of study include: lecture, presentations from individuals who practice a specific therapy, audio, video, and student participation and discussion.
BELIEFS, EMOTIONS, MINDBODY MEDICINE, and HEALTH
Reviews the belief systems that are presently used for health promotion in our society including the medical model, nutrition, botanicals, Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, touch and body work therapies, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, breathwork, meditation, music, relaxation, movement therapies, native, and traditional healing. Emphasis will be placed on the study of limiting beliefs and emotions and how mind/body medicine is used in health promotion. Covers Biofeedback Training, Guided Imagery, and the concepts of congruency, imprinting, modeling, and visualization to change beliefs which support unhealthy habits and unreasonable fears into lifelong constructs of wellness. You will work with students in class exercises as well as through personal journal keeping.
Introduces the student to the basic concepts of nutrition with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention and/or control. You will study nutrition across the life cycle including special needs of individuals, families, and cultures; concepts of diet including diet and nutritional assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Students will learn the facts and strategies necessary to use dietary supplements with reference to their health history and goals. This course will encourage you to practice sound nutritional practices in your daily life.
MODERN WESTERN BIOMEDICINE
Provides an understanding of the foundations of Western medicine through the history and development of morality, individualism, progress, and the influences scientific method from reductionism into medical science. Focuses on what to expect in an appointment, diagnostic techniques, use of specialties, healing versus curing, methods of modern medicine, causes of disease, iatrogenic disease, and the value of data and scientific studies.
TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
Introduces the fundamental elements of usage and practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Focuses on a basic understanding of yin and yang, Qi (life force energy), Shen(spirit), Chinese concepts of disease, methods of diagnosis, five element theory, the meridians, acupuncture, dietary considerations, and basic Chinese herbology. Topics: what to expect in an appointment, methods of treatment, treatment strategies, and scientific studies of Chinese medicine, and outcome expectations.
THE TOUCH & BODYWORK THERAPIES
In order to understand how the touch and bodywork therapies are used in health care you will learn: the history, principles, assessment strategies, effectiveness, scientific research, and treatment approaches used in: Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, Acupressure (Shiatsu), Trigger Point/Myotherapy, Reflexology, Applied Kinesiology, and Reiki. Covers the postural and movement therapies including: Polarity Therapy, Feldenkrais Method, Craniosacral Therapy, Myofascial Release Therapy, Trager, Matrix Repatterning and Structural Integration (Rolfing). Presentations by certified or registered practitioners are included.
BOTANICALS, FOOD, and HERBAL MEDICINE
Introduces health practitioners and the general student to the basic principles of herbal medicine. Includes: chemical and physiological actions, commonly used herbs, dosage, possible side effects, contraindications, differences between Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Western herbal medicine, as well as the practical usage of herbs for addressing illness prevention and balancing health throughout the nine body systems.
HOMEOPATHY & NATUROPATHY
You will explore the philosophy, theory, and application of principles in natural healing from studies in homeopathy and naturopathy. Key principles of study in each include: the cause of illness, homeostasis, vital life force, the minimum dose, and non invasive therapies. Topics: consulting a practitioner, the health and environmental history, treatment options, self-help foundations, and current scientific research.
Provides you with the major theory, history, assessment techniques, remedies, and self-help practices in Ayurvedic medicine. This system comes from the Indian subcontinent and has been in practice forover 2000 years. Presentations and discussions include: consulting a practitioner, the theory of the Doshas, chakras, cleansing methods, breathing, yoga, dietary and medicinal remedies, treatment outcomes, and research evidence.
MEDITATION, BREATH WORK, AND SPIRITUAL HEALTH
Introduces you to the healing and balancing effects of breath work and meditation for emotional and spiritual health through study, discussion, journal writing, and practice. Covers: the effects of the different types of breath work and meditation on spiritual, mental, and emotional balance, stress reduction, pain management, creativity, physical energy, and personal change and transformation.
Introduces you to the theory, benefits, and methods of Yoga, Tai Chi Chuan, QiGong, Feldenkrais method, music therapy, conscious breathing, guided imagery, and meditation for centering, calming, relaxation, and overall renewal. Includes: a history of each, study of the various forms, and health benefits of such practices. Presentations by practitioners of the methods are included.
MUSIC, SOUND, HYPNOSIS, and RELAXATION THERAPIES
Introduces how music and sound fundamentally improve mental and emotional well-being. The usage of voice/words for deep change work for all kinds of behaviors and health issues will be presented and experienced. We will explore how to construct simple programs for oneself that can create inspiration and health improvements in aspects of life that seem difficult to manage because of habitual thinking or behaviors. The role of deep relaxation and its effect on the physical body along with mental and emotional states will be identified and experienced.
